I am the Very Model of a Singularitarian is a catchy parody of Ray Kurzweil’s description of the Technological Singularity in his book The Singularity is Near set to the tune of I am the Very Model of a Modern Major General. Charlie Kam, who is one of the forces behind the LifeBoat Foundation, SIAI, and other future-minded institutions, sings the song himself.

But I wonder if that's such a good idea. Destructive technologies generally seem to come along sooner than constructive ones—we got war rockets before missile interceptors, and biological warfare before antibiotics. This suggests that there will be a window of vulnerability between the time when we develop technologies that can do dangerous things, and the time when we can protect against those dangers. The slower we move, the longer that window may remain open, leaving more time for the evil, the unscrupulous or the careless to wreak havoc. My conclusion? Faster, please.

Meine größte Sorge bei Eintreten der Singularität wäre nicht die Singularität selbst, sondern die nicht stattfindende gleichmäßige globale Verteilung. (Frei im Sinne von William Gibson: As I've said many times, the future is already here. It's just not very evenly distributed.) Jede Verzögerung der Verteilung würde zu einem massiven Problem führen – für die, die nicht daran teilhaben können (exponentielles “hinterher sein” – Mooresches Gesetz). Je nachdem, wer ganz vorne dabei ist, könnte sich das für den “Rest” sehr nachteilig auswirken.

Bei Clarke, der seit 1973 mit der US-Regierung arbeitet — ehemals im Office of the Secretary of Defense, dann in Bereichen wie nationale Sicherheit, Anti-Terror und Militär — kann man davon ausgehen, dass er nicht bloß einfach über das gelesen hat, worüber er schon geschrieben hat, ob Sachbuch oder Fiktion. Umso interessanter ist es, wie “so jemand” sich Gedanken um die Zukunft macht. In Breakpoint nähert er sich dabei der Singularität: Wie Wissenschaft den Mensch neu erschaffen und erweitern wird, und Gen-Forschung so ein empfindungsfähiges Computerprogramm schafft, dass global vernetzt sein wird. Kein gewöhnliches Sci-Fi-Buch, aber eben auch keines für jeden.
